“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me….’I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’”
Matthew 26:35, 36, 40
An incredible story
Louise Marie and her husband owned and operated a “concession” in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In addition to farmland, it included a school, a medical clinic, a church and an orphanage. In 2003 her village was brutally attacked and she was the sole surviving adult along with 23 children from the orphanage. With the help of some Pygmies that she had employed, Louise Marie and the children escaped to Uganda. By making and selling jewellery on the street and begging for shelter in churches, they managed to survive. In 2011 Louise Marie was sponsored by the Canadian government to come to Canada where she started a new life in Winnipeg. But she could only bring 8 of the children with her. She sent as much money as she could afford back to Uganda to care for the children that were left but it was very little. In 2016 another 9 of the children were sponsored by the Canadian government.
We applied to sponsor the 6 refugees in late 2018 and we were approved in June of 2019! They were due to arrive in Winnipeg on April 7, 2020, when their travel was postponed indefinitely because of COVID-19. We were thrilled to finally welcome them to Winnipeg on January 12, 2021.
Please consider donating to our Refugee Fund. This money will provide housing, food, clothing, transportation, etc for their first year in Canada.
Please make all cheques out to Fort Garry MB Church.
