Newcomer Support Team for Refugees

Immigration Consulting Delegate(s)

  • “Subject matter expert” to research, document and provide advice and guidance to support team members on the full range of needs and issues for newcomers and their integration into Canadian life.

Housing Coordination Delegate(s)

  • Determine housing needs for newcomers
  • Source appropriate housing and work through lease/rental arrangements
  • Manage ongoing housing needs and issues as required

Financial Planning Delegate(s)

  • Works with team and family to maintain spending within budget guidelines.
  • Updates committee Coordinator and Treasurer with budget status reports
  • Helps family setup their own budget process based on income generated.

Health Care Delegate(s)

  • Develop health-care plans for newcomers to meet initial and ongoing health needs. Includes physical, dental, vision, drug prescriptions, disability supports, etc.
  • Identify health-care providers (doctors, dentists, optometrists, etc) who can take on newcomers
  • Develop plans for crisis/trauma counseling, as required

Education/Employment Delegate(s)

  • Research the many government and non-profit supports provided to Newcomers
  • Enroll newcomers in appropriate English training, high school education and job training

On Call Squad

  • a group of people that can be “on call” to assist the other team members by providing rides, visits and other short term tasks as needed (rides to appointments, explaining how a dishwasher works, showing them how to buy a bus pass, taking them for groceries, etc)


  • Overall coordination of tasks for Newcomers Support Team, ensuring effective communication and decision making in support of newcomers
  • Define and fill team roles
  • Calls on team members as required
  • Liaison to Church Council
  • Communicate status and needs to FGMB as needed

Prayer Delegate(s)

  • Understands the details of the newcomers’ needs and prays accordingly
  • Prays for team members
  • Communicates appropriate prayer requests and praise items to different church prayer groups and the church as discerned


  • Act as the “face” of FGMB to newcomers
  • Provide regular, hands-on support to newcomer family, assisting with the full range of their needs as they integrate into Canadian life, including emotional support, friendship, etc.
  • Identify specific needs and communicate the details to the appropriate team member(s) to look after
  • Provide regular status updates to the team and congregation, as required

Item Collection Delegate(s)

  • Communicate needs to FGMB
  • Coordinate collection of clothing, furnishings, household items, etc, from FGMB and other sources
  • Temporary storage of donated items (FG office)
  • Distribution to newcomers

Fundraising Delegate(s)

  • Develop strategies and specific plans to raise funds for newcomers
  • Recruit and lead volunteers to implement fundraising activities

Current Needs:

  • used cell phones (recent models) for the refugees for when they arrive.
  • storage for furniture items (couch, dresser, chairs, etc
  • gently used furniture, bedding and household items for our 6 sponsored refugees.
  • winter jackets and boots for 3 young men and 3 young women.
