Carl Heppner

Lead Pastor

Carl has been serving as Lead Pastor at FGMB since November 2013.  Carl and Kathy were married in 1999 and have four fantastic children.  Prior to coming to FGMB, Carl worked with Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) in an HR role supporting International personnel.  Carl and Kathy also previously served internationally with MCC in Bolivia for several years.

Carl is a passionate teacher who loves mentoring young leaders. He always has a stack of books on the go and loves spending time working on renovating their family’s 100 yr. old home.

Kevin Dyck

Interim Worship Coordinator

Kevin has a passion for worshipping Jesus and is both excited and humbled to have the opportunity to coordinate and plan worship at Fort Garry on an interim basis. 

Kevin has been a part of Fort Garry for many years and has served in many different areas including worship, preaching, children’s ministry, church council, and Venture Winnipeg. 

Prior to this opportunity, Kevin worked as a physiotherapist for Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet for 17 years.  Being married to Tracy and being able to share life with his 2 amazing children bring joy and happiness to him daily. He enjoys golfing, yard work, cycling, the Jets, the Patriots, and seeing the people that he works with accomplish things that they never thought possible.

Kristen Nikkel

Worship (On Leave)

Being a Worship Arts Pastor at Fort Garry allows Kristen to work with people’s gifts in music and the arts. She is the point person for Worship Ministries to facilitate our community gatherings with God and each other. Kristen has been in this position since 2007 and holds a music degree with a concentration in piano.

With her husband Matt, they lead worship together and drink coffee. With their two young boys Andrew & Zachary, this family likes music, camping & the Blue Jays!

Ruth Schellenberg


Ruth has been on staff at FGMB since July 2006 in the role of Children’s Pastor. She loves walking alongside children and their families in our community; encouraging them in their faith.

She has been married to David for 30 years and they have 2 sons, Jordan and Caleb. Ruth and David love to travel, hike, cycle and take walks in their neighbourhood. They also love to watch NFL football.

Ruth has degrees in Criminology and in Family Studies, plus several Master’s level courses in Theology. Prior to coming on staff at Fort Garry she worked for 15 years with Youth for Christ in Winnipeg serving with Teen Moms and the drop-in ministry.

Brooklyn Friesen

Office Administrator

Brooklyn has been serving in a pastoral internship role at FGMB since August 2018, and has come on board as staff as of February 2019! She loves connecting with new people and helping others feel known. She is passionate about the church and plans to pursue pastoral ministry in the future.

She enjoys anything that gives her the opportunity to create things. When not in the office, you can find Brooklyn biking around the city, painting, writing, doing embroidery, and probably singing.

Brooklyn has graduated from Canadian Mennonite University with a General Batchelor of Arts degree, having studied music, history, and theology primarily. She has plans to continue her schooling, slowing chipping away at her Masters of Divinity.

Darryl Wylie

Facility Manager

Darryl and his wife Candace have been attending Fort Garry since roughly 2008, and Darryl has been Facility Manager here since late 2011.  They have been blessed with three children.

Darryl loves to be active which fits well with his current position at FGMB. Sports have always been a passion for him, and leading the Men’s Night Out here at church has been rewarding!

Prior to FGMB, Darryl worked for 22 years in the hotel industry and is dedicated to working for those around him.  Whether it is a wedding, funeral, or a meeting that the church is rented for, he truly enjoys making that event “special”

Nicholas Willms

Pastoral Intern

Nicholas is in his final year of his Bachelors Degree at Canadian Mennonite University.  He is majoring in Biblical and Theological Studies, and minoring in Counselling Studies. Nicholas is interning at FGMB for his practicum placement. He has been attending the FGMB College and Careers for the past few years.

Nicholas grew up in Southern Ontario, cheering for the Maple Leafs and Blue Jays. Nicholas is a maker and an artist; he loves drawing, printmaking, and graphic design. On his days off, you might catch Nicholas at the theatre watching a new movie or at a coffee shop reading a book.
