Living Stones

When Peter looks at a community of Christians, he concludes this curious comparison: “you are living stones that God is building into his spiritual temple.” (1 Peter 2:5). But who would ever imagine that something as inanimate as a rock could come alive? Hard and heavy, cracked and dusty, stones are no space for vitality. Yet Peter “the Rock”, has seen Jesus bring life in so many scenes of deadness that he can’t help but see it again among these stones. While this is the unique occurrence in Scripture of the phrase “living stones”, rocks appear again and again in God’s story. Moses struck the rock at Horeb, releasing water for God’s people to drink (Exodus 17:6). Jesus taught his followers to build their lives on rock instead of sand (Matthew 7:24). And the Lord himself is described as “my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection.” (Psalm 18:2). (And these are only a few mentions among many more!) This fall, we want to remember that we as a church are living stones being built together in God’s design. This is fashioned around the cornerstone, Jesus himself, and built for his purposes in the world today. We are a spiritual house built for the work of Inviting, Being, and Sending. May we surrender to the building hands of God, joining our lives together in his work.
